After breakfast you will be taken to Aberdeen Jetty for Harbour Cruise covering Ross Island, Viper Island & North Bay. Bearing a haunted look today, Ross Island was the Administrative Headquarters for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, before an earthquake rocked it in 1941. The headquarters were then shifted to Port Blair. Ross Island was the headquarters of the Indian Penal Settlement for nearly 80 years. The island presently houses the ruins of old buildings like Ballroom, Chief Commissioner’s House, Govt. House, Church, Hospital, Bakery, Press, Swimming Pool and Troop Barracks, all in dilapidated condition, reminiscent of the old British regime. There is also a cemetery and a small museum managed by the Indian Navy.
Viper Island is the site of the old Jail where the British used to harbor convicts and political prisoners. It has ruins of a gallows atop a hillock. The Jail was abandoned when the Cellular Jail was constructed in 1906. Today, the two-storied Jail building stands tumbled to the plinth level except for a portion of the roof with the outer wall dilapidated. But for a few birds which have built their nests inside the tomb of the gallows, only a deafening silence prevails there. North Bay is the ideal place to see corals, reefs, ornamental fishes and other marine life with the help of glass bottom boats. Tourists can enjoy snorkeling also. Private boat services are there for transportation from Port Blair. Tourists should keep packed food and drinking water while visiting this place. Return back to Aberdeen jetty at 4.30 pm.
